In honor of Beyonce…

Just things

… I have been lip-synching today’s posts.

Be assured that next posts will be the real thing, however.

Australian Talking Clock – not for the faint of heart

Just things

I warned you – Shawn

Proudly showing off his newly-leased downtown apartment to a couple of friends late one night, a drunk Maori led the way to his bedroom where there was a big brass gong hanging on the wall.

‘What’s that big brass gong for?’ one of the friend’s asked.

‘Issss nod a gong. Issss an Australian Talking Clock’ he drunkenly replied.

‘An Australian Talking Clock – seriously?’

‘Yup.’ ‘Hmmm (hic).’

‘How’s it work?’ the second friend asked, squinting at it.

‘Just watch’ he said.

He picked up a hammer, gave the gong an ‘ear-shattering bash’ and stepped back.

His three mates stood looking at one another for a moment in astounded silence.

Suddenly, an Australian voice from the other side of the wall screamed,

‘For f— sake, you stupid prick. It’s ten past three in the f—ing morning!’

So, Yesterday…

Just things

…I go to a doctor appointment. I get there and park next to a couple with a teenager also heading to the doctor. They seemed to be a normal family… until the kid got out of the car.

First off, I do not understand the whole androgyny thing… it is not cool or interesting. I am far from a prude, and don’t mind guys with long hair or girls with a shaved head. The “guess what I am?” thing is beyond me but hey… to each their own. I could not tell if this was a he or a she at all. Add on top of the gender neutrality was the clothes this kid had on… a purple coat with fur around the hood, and these bright red knee-length shorts that were enormously baggy with black zippers all over them. Pasty white legs and black socks and boots finished off this well-rounded ensemble.

Wait… it gets better.

As they were walking away in front of me, I had to do a double take. Sticking out from the back of the coat was a goddam tail. A BIG, yellow foxtail with a black tip that was probably knee length and CURVED UP pushing the coat out. The parents never said a word to the kid and acted just like nothing was out of the ordinary. I did find out the name was “Daria” when they called her into the doctor. Maybe they were there getting it circumcised… hell, I don’t know.

Now, I am pretty liberal when it comes to stuff… tattoos, pink hair, piercings (hell… I have 10 earrings), and I was never one to really like to have short hair. But… if my kid EVER wanted to go out in public wearing their pants hanging low with their undies hanging out the back (so, just what IS the belt for that you have on if not to hold your damn pants in place?!?!), or a goddamn tail like that… a line is going to be drawn. I would not be seen in public with your ass.

You just do not see that every day.

Thankfully.

Open Mic Night

Just things

I went to, but did not play in, Open Mic Night here in Sequim. I wanted to check it out just to see how it was set up.

There are some damn fine players here in this area. I got to see some serious bluegrass musicians and singers, a slack-key guitar player who had some really nice songs, an auto-harpist, a gal who played harmonica that was very good, and many others. It was over 2 1/2 hours of music all together, and it was a good time. I have to get my acoustic worked on so I can play soon… maybe next week, but we will have to see about that.

I got to talking with a bluegrass guy named Cort Anderson (http://cortarmstrongmusic.com), who I met at the songwriting workshop last week, and I am going to work with him on a song. I got an idea for some interesting lyrics just before I left to go tonight that I mentioned to him and he wants to see them. It will fit his style perfectly so I am looking forward to working on it with him, and will be a fun project and a definite challenge for me. Check out his music on his website. He is really talented, and a really nice guy.

Light as Art

Just things

At the Hayward Gallery in London, England is an art show all about light. Here is a link for it: http://www.king5.com/news/slideshows/Photos-Light-as-art-show-in-London-188846211.html?gallery=y&c=y&ref=%2F#/news/slideshows/Photos-Light-as-art-show-in-London-188846211.html?gallery=y&c=y&ref=%2F&img=0&c=y.

There is some really cool pictures on here. The one that really catches me is the first one with the rooms. Many other ones are pretty interesting as well, but that one is so simple, yet intense and interesting.

I would love to see this show – maybe it will travel over here.
